There we were, sitting and waiting patiently for the course description and what we will be studying through the semester by Dr.Jaya. A surprise it was, instead of being lectured on the description of the course, our ears was pleased with the powerful voice and the beautiful musical arrangement of a Sufi singer, Saaein Zahoor. The lights were dimmed, and everyone tried to comprehend the song. But what is there to comprehend? Do we really need to know of what the singer is actually saying in his song? The soulful Sufi singer was singing his praises to Allah in Urdu. I did not understand a word that came from the singer’s mouth, but I was mesmerized by his powerful vocals and the musical arrangement was simply brilliant. Anyone who appreciates music would appreciate the art and beauty of that song, regardless the fact that it was in Urdu, and the singer is a Sufi. Why does language or religion have to be in the path of appreciating something that is of beauty?
